CABBS at the Cleveland Boat
and Waterfront Lifestyle Expo

Boats are first built in the mind. Each of the boats on display at the CABBS booth showed that fantasy, whim, adventure and spirit motivated their builders.

LOONYBIRD is Joe Horvath's inner thrill seeking teenager coming to the surface. The 8 ft. sport hydroplane built of ¼” marine plywood can achieve speeds in the mid 30's with a 7.5hp outboard. Based on the MiniMost design by William Jackson and using a stressed skin construction on fir frames, the boat comes in at under 70 pounds. The driver kneels to steer. At such a low eye level to the water surface the sensation of speed would be incredible. Just keep that nose pointing high, Joe!

SWIFTSURE is John Bridges' fantasy creation of a by-gone era. Although it might look like a pirate ship and bring out the pirate in those who see it, the boat is a scaled down replica of a 1750's English Revenue Cutter. Designed by New Zealander S.H. Reid, the 5 meter hull is built of occume marine plywood. John's osage orange blocks and belaying pins add accents of sailing the high seas.

KRAZY KAT is Jeff Gifford's get away to family adventure. The six foot beam of this Bolger designed catboat ensures plenty of stability for outings with the kids. Built of ¼” marine plywood, Jeff used mesquite for the mooring cleat and belaying cleats and made the mast of southern yellow pine. Many summertime adventures are in store as the Gifford's use 11'6” ft. KRAZY KAT to explore the local waters.

BAILEY BOAT is CABBS's tribute to the spirit of a departed member. Don Bailey had built the frames and topsides for this Green Island 15 design before he died suddenly last July, stricken by a heart attack.

In memory of Don, CABBS members will complete the boat and donate the proceeds from its sale to a charity named by his family. The 15'6” by 5'6” design comes from the board of Australian, Mike Roberts. The boat is constructed from 6mm and 9 mm plywood and will be sheathed in 6 oz. fiberglass set in epoxy. The frames and trim are mahogany. The ample sloop rig, flat bottom and lightweight design will mean a quick, fun boat. Check out the CABBS website for future construction progress and information for bidding on the boat. Launch is anticipated in late spring.

Four boats from four builders, each expressing a different energy to first put saw to wood.
